I'm pretty impressed by sshl and I hope to use it when I replace the linux all-in-one box by an refurbished Ultra 20/hipster. To be honest, for a very long time I had port 22 opened as well for ssh the time to trust sshl and the difference is quite noticeable, security wise. On the other hand, if you don't allow root login, have good passwords for users and root and log rotation correctly set, port 22 or not is just a convenience question but I'm not a security guy, really. As part of an upgrade, I do a chroot into the mounted new BE to use the pkg(5) "in place" (and with altroot of "/") and if this fails - I fall back to alternate root (-R) with the unchanged pkg(5) version installed in the original BE. In either case, I pass the "--deny-new-be" parameter to pkg(5). (relevant code snippet is presented below in this message) However there are some packages whose upgrades seem to require a "non-Live BE" installation. And even though I install to an alternate BE, they fail. Is there some way around this, beside fixing pkg(5) itself? For example, recently I got the state below: the pkg program got updated in the new BE, but it could not be used via chroot due to "live image" concerns, and the old pkg(5) in original BE did not suffice for the upgrades. A reboot into the new BE and another upgrade request fixes this, but that's kind of unwieldy. And installing new pkg into old BE goes somewhat against the purpose of BEs (unchanged old state I can roll back into - thus including escape from broken pkg(5) as any other bit of system software). Our main box is about 3 years old and is also running oi_151a8. We're running into some issues insisting that some of the disks are over-temperature (via console messages), and now format shows only 6 of the 26 disks installed in the system. "fmadm faulty" shows what I expected, that a slew of disks exceeded temperature thresholds and have been marked as faulty. I find this hard to believe, as the system is properly cooled, in a colo rack, and the sensors on board all show normal temperatures via IPMI. FWIW these disks have never been used; they are brand new and waiting to be added into zpools. The controller BIOS shows all the disks as connected and healthy. Just wondering if anyone has run across this before and what can be done about it. The hardware is SuperMicro 6047R-E1R24L and the disks are WD SAS 4TB drives, with two intel SSDs in the back for rpool and log devices. > Matt > _______________________________________________ > openindiana-discuss mailing list > openindiana-discuss at openindiana.org > http://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss > From matt.boswell at medsphere.com Thu Jul 2 01:29:05 2015 From: matt.boswell at medsphere.com (Matt Boswell) Date: Thu, 2 Jul 2015 01:29:05 +0000 Subject: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Support for LSI-2308 SAS controller in oi_151a8 In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Ouch. Thanks. I?ll do some research. On a related note, we?re using Constellations in our other build. No firmware problems, but we?ve had lots of failures. The difference is that we?re presenting them to OI as vdevs on the RAID controller rather than JBOD. Wonder if that might be a workaround; to create a bunch of single disk RAID0 vdevs. Matt On 7/1/15, 6:11 PM, "Schweiss, Chip" wrote: >Sounds exactly like a firmware problem that Seagate Constellations had. >With lsiutils you can read what threshold the disks report. > >You likely need a firmware upgrade or downgrade for the disks. > >-Chip > > >On Wed, Jul 1, 2015 at 7:16 PM, Matt Boswell >wrote: > >> Hi all, >> >> We bit the bullet and bought a companion storage server to use for ZFS >> replication and failover. Possibly you can install back the 4.3.28 (with patched script) and then uninstall it cleanly. The other ways would be to dig in the guts of old pkg(svr4) metadata in /var/sadm/install/contents searching for SUNWvbox references to excise, and remove drivers following the code of pre-/post-remove scripts and vboxconfig.sh - I'd do that as a last resort. Do your pools have autosnapshots? You might be able to rollback or clone your BE to a point before where you tried and failed to remove the package. If everyone contributes with a component Makefile the job can be done really fast. I started with ffmpeg and some libraries and it is dead easy to compile: most of the work consist of writing the Makefile. VLC was more tricky due to the use of strerror_l which required some reading. Should we start a "adopt a component" campaign ? But the networking fails to start. I think the trouble is on the openindiana end as every other OS I've been porting xosview to (NetBSD, FreeBSD, Gnu Hurd) has just worked right out of the box using DHCP with no interaction at all on my part. Does anyone happen to know a special way to kick, poke, prod or otherwise persuade openindiana to bring up the ethernet interface and configure it via DHCP? I've googled and found some instructions (creating things like /etc/nodename etc). But none of the tips I found worked for me. Yea. I tried out that nwam wiki page. The examples found there did not seem to work for me the way they look on that page. Maybe I fat fingered something. There seems no way for me to cut/paste to the console (running in QEMU). So, doing all those configure tweaks is tricky (compounded by the fact that I have no solars admin experience). I'm setting up another image to try again. I do remember that the ethernet interface is there and it does show up when ifconfig is run. There is also some sort of GUI widget on the desktop that reports that it failed to get a DHCP address. So, I think there is some kinda automatic configuration setup and running (using the install from here: http://openindiana.org/download/#live). But for some reason the DHCP client on openindiana is failing. I tried with fixed address and DHCP but it just would not work. The only way I was able to run OI with KVM/libvirt was with a bridged interface. There was also a report a while back that VMware ESX had problems with OI not wanting to see the network when coupled to a vswitch. My guess is that OI doesn't like the iptables NAT network hybrid thingies that libvirt uses per default. Nit: that last command should be "dhcp start". Take a look at the ifconfig(1M) description for "auto-dhcp". Using the old-style interface, those commands would be made "permanent" (i.e., effective at boot time) by doing this: touch /etc/hostname.$IF touch /etc/dhcp.$IF where "$IF" is the name of the interface in question (e.g., e1000g0). -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W From jimklimov at cos.ru Tue Jul 14 21:14:41 2015 From: jimklimov at cos.ru (Jim Klimov) Date: Tue, 14 Jul 2015 23:14:41 +0200 Subject: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Fixing DHCP networking In-Reply-To: <21925.26096.423297.144221@lrd.home.lan> References: <21925.21070.174686.592913@lrd.home.lan> <21925.26096.423297.144221@lrd.home.lan> Message-ID: <7E49B9F4-A06B-4F4B-B285-AA141294DA7F@cos.ru> 14 ???? 2015??. 21:41:36 CEST, mike-romberg at comcast.net ?????: >>>>>> " " == Jonathan Adams writes: > >> >http://wiki.openindiana.org/oi/Using+NWAM+to+configure+network+interfaces > > Have a look at "dladm show-link" as well to see what networking > > exists. > > Yea. Sure. The dhcpagent(1M) man page describes the client. It logs to syslog(3C) with facility LOG_DAEMON. Assuming you have syslog set up correctly (see /etc/syslog.conf), the messages show up in a file such as /var/log/syslog. You can also use snoop(1M) or wireshark to monitor its progress. And you can do this: # ifconfig e1000g0 dhcp status That displays the current negotiation status. > Or can I > just use some variant of ifconfig and route to setup a static ip > address? It works the same as ifconfig on any other system. Here's an example: # ifconfig e1000g0 192.168.254.1/24 up Of course, if the underlying interface doesn't work for some reason, that's not really going to help a whole lot. -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W From mike-romberg at comcast.net Wed Jul 15 18:51:40 2015 From: mike-romberg at comcast.net (mike-romberg at comcast.net) Date: Wed, 15 Jul 2015 12:51:40 -0600 Subject: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Fixing DHCP networking In-Reply-To: <4536234.pG5iAhvyZc@hephaistos.home.local> References: <21925.21070.174686.592913@lrd.home.lan> <21925.27930.104497.888009@lrd.home.lan> <4536234.pG5iAhvyZc@hephaistos.home.local> Message-ID: <21926.43964.683490.138462@lrd.home.lan> >>>>> " " == Till Wegm?ller writes: > In my attempts in QEMU/KVM it turned out to be the NAT > interface of libvirt was the problem. I got it (openindiana and DHCP) working with libvirt! Holy gods that thing is an unholy mess of XML. I think the only thing libvirt does is provide an camouflage of xml around quemu which does all the actual work. Anyway I'm posting here in case it helps someone else attempting to run openindiana (but I think it applies to all the Solaris variants) in libvirt. The big key is to not use KVM. If KVM is being used then Solaris will see an ethernet device. And it functions perfectly fine (from the perspective of the guest OS (Solaris). But it is a black hole. Nothing goes in or out. Turning off KVM for openindiana was not completely obvious. So here is the command line I used to install an image of openindiana from the pretest project (http://www.nongnu.org/pretest/). Most of the install args are from there. But if you add my changes then openindiana will have working NAT networking: virt-install --name 'openindiana-hipster' --connect qemu:///system \ --virt-type qemu --wait=0 --vcpus=1 --import --boot hd \ --ram 1024 --network=network=default,model=e1000 \ --disk path=openindiana-hipster-20150330.build-ready.qcow2,device=disk,format=qcow2,bus=ide,perms=rw The super important bit is the '--virt-type qemu' line. Anyway thanks everyone for the help. I was unsure how ifconfig ran (and more importantly how to disable the auto networking stuff so I could run ifconfig). Once I found the black hole I could concentrate on the real problem. It was not the NAT network. It is the KVM ethernet device. Hope this helps someone else... I am using oi a9 on a couple of our servers, and they are running sendmail, using almost the same main.mc compiled from the original servers. They are all logging to syslog, but on the original servers I get the "from=" headers and the "to=" headers logged in syslog, and on the new server I only get "to=" logged to syslog, and then only when the email is being forwarded to the smart-host, not on receipt. We grep the syslog to see if an email has been received, before it goes through our mail scanner system, and the lack of a from makes this impossible. has anyone else come across this, or any solution/suggestion on how to get it to work? Can you determine what has changed between the original server and the new one? Is /etc/syslog.conf the same, particularly the line that redirects to /var/log/syslog? The selector should be `mail.debug', which handles all log messages with the `mail' facility. You might need to disable svc:/system/system-log:default temporarily and start syslogd in debug mode instead. This will show you all of the log messages sent to syslogd. You should still try syslog debugging, just in case sendmail's log message are being sent with a different facility or level. Sendmail's internal log level, not related to syslog's level, should default to 9. It's documented in cf/README this way: confLOG_LEVEL LogLevel [9] Log level. Does sendmail only misbehave in a non-global zone? If not, maybe something else is responsible for the peculiar logging. I'd recommend filing a bug report at illumos.org for this behavior that you've noticed. Message-ID: Hello, this message is the first instance of the Hipster News Bi-weekly. Every two weeks, we will try to give a comprehensive overview of the recent progress: - developments, - new and updated packages, - current known issues, - works-in-progress and future goals. This will hopefully allow you to get better understanding of the current activity and give you the opportunity to provide insights and feedback. We will also post these news to a blog entry (yet to be defined). There has been a lot of activity in the past weeks in oi-userland [1], summarized below: most notable being the encumbered repository. 1. Hipster encumbered repository The encumbered repository for Hipster [2] was created to provide multimedia software which used to be part of sfe-encumbered. As a first step ffmpeg 2.7.2 and dependencies were added. You can find a list of components which ought to be added in the coming weeks, on the Wiki page [3]. Contributing new components is as easy as: - forking + cloning the oi-userland repository, - copying one subdirectory of components/encumbered to get started, - modify the Makefile and add patches if necessary such that ?gmake install? succeeds, - generating a manifest with ?gmake sample-manifest? and modifying it if necessary, - creating a pull-request. 2. Summary of oi-userland activity Additions: - encumbered: ffmpeg 2.7.2 + dependent libraries - openal 1.16.0 - bullet 2.83 - inkscape 0.48.5 Updates: - Apache 2.4.16 - Lighttpd 1.4.36 - Perl 5.22 (in progress) - PHP 5.5.27, 5.4.43 - freetype 2.5.5 - libdrm to 2.4.62 - nodejs 0.12.7 - several X11 components and libraries, in sync with x-s12-clone - Boost 1.58 with MPI support - Compiz Fusion 8.10 Deprecations: - Apache 1.3 - MySQL 5.1 - Perl 5.10 (see Heads-up below !) Current goals: - add GTK3: requires atk, gobject-introspection update first - port of LibreOffice 4.4.x: warm thanks to Apostolos Syroupolos for contributing the librevenge component, any help is appreciated ! [4] - update Pulseaudio to 6.0: in progress - add more components to hipster-encumbered, priority being VLC and gstreamer bad/ugly codecs 3. Heads-up: Perl 5.10 deprecation Removal of Perl 5.10 means that default illumos.sh will not work any longer and you need to add : export PERL_VERSION="5.22"; export PERL_PKGVERS="-522" to illumos.sh while compiling illumos-gate. The ntfs-3g library is already part of Hipster, only the fuse interface and fuse itself are missing. The current bottleneck is the interface between the vfs and the fuse kernel module for concatenating write chunks into memory pages. > Thanks for your report. > Best, > > Aur?lien > > ? mar. juil. 28 04:08:00 2015 GMT+0200, bentahyr at chez.com a ?crit : >> I did some test today with another USB drive. >> Here are the results : >> >> From Linux (NTFS) >> $ dd if=FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img of=/media/ben/MD/FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img >> 3948544+0 enregistrements lus >> 3948544+0 enregistrements ?crits >> 2021654528 octets (2.0 GB) copi?s, 91.5862 s, 22.1 MB/s >> >> From OI >> Jul 28 08:50:42 hostname usba: [ID 912658 kern.info] USB 2.0 device (usb5e3,702) operating at hi speed (USB 2.x) on USB 2.0 root hub: storage at 7, scsa2usb0 at bus address 2 >> Jul 28 08:50:42 hostname usba: [ID 349649 kern.info] USB TO IDE >> Jul 28 08:50:42 hostname genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] scsa2usb0 is /pci at 0,0/pci1028,21e at 1d,7/storage at 7 >> Jul 28 08:50:42 hostname genunix: [ID 408114 kern.info] /pci at 0,0/pci1028,21e at 1d,7/storage at 7 (scsa2usb0) online >> >> using NTFS-3g >> $ dd if=FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img of=/mnt/FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img >> 3948544+0 records in >> 3948544+0 records out >> 2021654528 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 15867.8 s, 127 kB/s >> >> After reformating to UFS >> $ dd if=FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img of=/mnt/ben/FreeDOS-1.1-memstick-2-2048M.img >> 3948544+0 records in >> 3948544+0 records out >> 2021654528 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 110.893 s, 18.2 MB/s >> >> >> Yeah, really, something is wrong with the implementation of FAT/NTFS on OpenIndiana. >> Would a more recent NTFS-3G help ?
