Issue #1540 has been updated by Tundra Slosek.
This one caught me too. This is also issues #636, #579, #1055. I agree with the discussion in #1055 about the correct way to handle this - i.e. GUI tools that prompt for root password to escalate, should also gracefully handle root password expiration (minimally failing with an accurate error, maximally allowing change).

Bug #1540: Installation root password is immediately marked expired
https://www.illumos.org/issues/1540
Author: Chris Drake
Status: New
Priority: Normal
Assignee: OI Caiman
Category: Caiman (Installer)
Target version: oi_151_stable
Difficulty: Bite-size
Tags: needs-triage
The installation process asks for a root password. Once the system is booted and running, any attempt to, for example, add new packages will silently fail (when using the GUI, which asks for the root password and then vanishes). It's not until you try to 'su' on a terminal window that you find out the just-supplied root password is now marked as expired, and you have to put in a new one.
While not major, this is annoying and quite confusing (since things fail with no messages) until you figure out what's going on.
This is on the 151a release image, 64-bit install.
