One more implication of missing libgfortran.so:
libtool test suite fails:

fcdemo-exec.test: ===  Running fcdemo-exec.test
fcdemo-exec.test: ===  Executing uninstalled programs in i86
ld.so.1: fprogram: fatal: libgfortran.so.3: open failed: No such file or 
directory
