And I think that's a great approach for illumos to take as well. We have to support the 32-bit run time probably ~forever, but we can stop delivering 32-bit *commands*; especially we should not deliver both 32-bit and 64-bit programs -- assuming we are not also delivering a 32-bit kernel.
I'd possibly be OK with the concept of moving 32-bit x86 into a "fork" of illumos (another arch port, along the difference between sparc and x86), so that folks / distros who wanted to deliver a 32-bit system for older CPUs could still do it, but without burdening everyone else (and also without making the 32-bit build carry the 64-bit stuff either. :-)
