[oi-dev] No gdm or lightdm after update?

OK, did "pkg install mate_install" in a new BE, and it appears now
that it _tries_ to start a logon greeter of some sort. Unfortunately,
it doesn't stay up running long enough for me to see or do anything,
and once it exits (on this laptop) the screen is left in a mode that
vgatext doesn't know how to use. Last thing in var/adm/messages is:

Apr 17 21:58:29 tr705 gdm-simple-slave[855]: [ID 702911
daemon.warning] WARNING: Failed to give slave programs access to the

Any more ideas?
