Even with that workaround, I still have trouble with mate.  I get
these messages in .xsession-errors:

  (mate-power-manager:3042): PowerManager-WARNING **: 09:49:52.908: failed to send session response: Connection was disconnected before a reply was received
  X connection to :0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
  X connection to :0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
