I'm actually qualifying those desktops right now as control machines
for lab and manufacturing work. There are a few bugs I'm working
through getting fixed:
17548 early boot framebuffer reach exceeds grasp
https://www.illumos.org/issues/17548
https://code.illumos.org/c/illumos-gate/+/4350
17570 rge(4D) should aim before shooting
https://www.illumos.org/issues/17570
https://code.illumos.org/c/illumos-gate/+/4363
17571 rge(4D) should not bind to Realtek BMC device
https://www.illumos.org/issues/17571
https://code.illumos.org/c/illumos-gate/+/4362
With my prototype fixes for those in place, the system boots and
appears stable. I'm having a separate issue with a NIC on a PCIe
add-in card, but that might be related to the actual card itself.
I'm not sure that I would expect a desktop environment to run on these
systems. Our DRM port is relatively ancient, and does not appear to
include the "amdgpu" driver, which is what I would expect to attach to
the onboard graphics device. The port is here, if you're curious and
would like to work on it:
https://github.com/illumos/gfx-drm
For our purposes (custom software, not X11) the static framebuffer
mapping left in place by the EFI firmware is sufficient, so I'm not
expecting to do any DRM work at this time.
Cheers.
