That was the conclusion I came to also.

I've since tried using a USB just in case that works.  It just hangs
at a GRUB prompt.  I'm preparing another one just in case.

Really frustrating, but I will keep trying, there must be a way to
work out what's happening. :-)

In the meantime I have VirtualBox ;-)
