For thunderbird problem you can check bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openindiana/+bug/638722

Adding  93.188.130.68 pkg.openindiana.org to /etc/hosts worked for me (at
least to get past thunderbird problem).

I had several problems with "http protocol error: code: 503 reason: Service
Unavailable", on which I restarted image-update and it worked for a while.
I don't know if the problem is in my wifi or OpenIndiana's repo is
overloaded...
