Host bus adapter is just a fancy name for a multi-port and/or channel hard drive, fibre channel, or Ethernet storage card. A better and more thorough description may be found on wikipedia.
It reminds me of when Sun & other workstation vendors still called all their video cards frame buffers. q.v. the much older vector displays and the much newer graphics accelerators.
