There are many other software products where the source is maintained
by another group and that only need IPS packaging to run on many
distributions of Solaris. For example, I'm in the process of building
an IPS package for the ISC DHCP server.

This is is an excellent method of product integration, since the the
upstream group only needs to build something that will install into an
image. The downstream group then only needs to convert the image into
a package of the appropriate type, and load it into a package
repository.

Somebody would need to maintain the repository framework, but the
packages could be added and replaced by a variety of contributors.
