Well, the PCI expansion card is back in, and both drives are connected via the 
E-sata ports on the expansion card.

The memory passed the test with no problems.

The backup has already done 440gig (all be it very slowly) and the system has 
been up for over 8 hours now.

It looks like trying to copy the large amount of data over the USB line could 
be the cause of the lock ups ... after all, it is the same drives on the same 
OS. Possibly the chip sets on the mother board are too new? Who knows.

At some point, I'll try a single drive connected to the single e-sata port on 
the mother board. A large transfer through there might help furthe define what 
caused the lock ups.

So far, we have....

Two drives over USB conenction - lock up.
One drive on USB and one drive on MB E-sata - lock up.
Two drives on PCI E-sata card - working fine.
