I ran into that problem, too.  The problem was that network:default was
configuring the interface, but not bringing it up, leaving "route" with
nothing to act on; if I manually did an "ifconfig <dev> up" followed by
manually running the route command, it worked.  After doing this a  couple
times it magically started working automatically on boot, so I'm not sure
what exactly I did to fix it.
