Then download a Linux LiveCD and use it to boot your machine. Provided that 
the Xserver will start, which I am sure it will, please check file Xorg.0.log. 
This way we will be able to tell what is wrong. At any rate, problems like
yours show that we need to try to port things or else we will not be able
to use the OS on modern hardware.
