The first time I used sudo was on SunOS 4.x and, later, various BSDs. And since the mid 90s I've been using the sunfreeware gcc, GNU core utils, and sudo packages.
As for knocking Ubuntu, I don't know about Ubuntu server but Debian has been much easier to manage and upgrade for several years preceding the advent of Opensolaris' package manager which is, ironically, very much modeled after Debian's packaging architecture.
