I have created a new bug at bugs.openindiana.org and included the output of

truss -leaf -o /tmp/vlc.truss vlc -vv > /tmp/vlc.debug 2>&1

When I play the my DVD the language menu appears but VLC core dumps 
immediately after selecting the default language.
