Paul,

Actually, the JDS team does a good job in keeping the desktop environment in good shape. 


A lot of the recent desktop software was ported or can be ported. Commercial software like CREO, CATIA, and MathCad work - but now mostly in emulation software for Windows, if not Linux.

That's the desktop.  I also used Solaris as a workstation.  I used Mechanical Cad software.  Pro-Engineer, AKA Wildfire 5 which ran on Solaris.  It's latest release CREO 1.0 (renamed) now only runs on Windows.

This in my opinion is how Oracle turned a profit so quickly.  The turned off all funds externally and internally to promote and maintain Desktop/Workstation users.
