That happens when GNOME detects your system has hardware on console that
is capable of running compiz, and thus tries to run it for all sessions,
including those in Xvnc which can't support compiz.

If you can get to a normal desktop session, you can change the preferences
in the GNOME appearance panel to disable Visual Effects, which disables
compiz usage.
Otherwise, you can try the suggestions from:

to change the settings via remote login.
