from where did you download these packages?

It could be. Either USB support or ext2(3)fs is slow in your case.

As root you should write "savecore" and if crashdump was created and is
still on the disk, it will be exported to /var/crash/

I was using it several times a year ago and it was good enough for me
but mostly for ext2 data transfer.
