I see that you hijacked an existing discussion thread so threaded mail 
readers will show this thread as part of an earlier unrelated thread.

Is anyone still actively working on the ARM port?  Support for ARM 
(and particularly ARM64) would be very useful and open Illumos-based 
systems to new opportunities.   This is the sort of work that 
developers should be paid to do.

The various ARM-based server platforms I see emerging are very 
I/O-centric and focus more on getting data to/from the CPU than on CPU 
compute power.  This is good fit for problems that VMs are trying to 
solve today.  VMs try to solve the problem that CPUs have become very 
powerful (and power-hungry) so they provide a way to offer more 
"servers" per system, yet they do not help with the I/O issues. 
ARM-based servers typically provide a built-in switching matrix so 
that there is an optimized path to each mini-server in the larger 
server chassis.
