First off, I'd like to thank you all for all the help you've given me.  I really appreciate it.  I'd appreciate it if you'd bear with me just a little bit longer...

I called our ISP, and the tech support person told me that the person who told me last week that she had reconfigured the modem to go to the router could not possibly have done that.  I asked him to disable DHCP on the modem, which he did.  So it should no longer be assigning our static IP addresses to devices plugged into the modem.

I REMOVED THE "INTERMEDIATE" CISCO ROUTER FROM THE NETWORK.  In fact, I removed all network cables from the modem, and rebooted it.  

I turned off the the Linux server I'd brought to this remote location.  I unplugged the network cable, turned the machine back on, and reconfigured it to use the external IP addresses.  I turned it off, and then plugged the network cable directly into the ISP's MODEM, and powered the machine back on.  Again, it works fine.  I can browse the internet on it, and I can access web pages from its apache web server from the neighbor's internet connection.

I brought another OI machine here that is pretty much a clean install.  It doesn't have any of the complicated networking going on with it.  Before I plugged the network cable into anything, I powered the machine on, and configured it to use one of the EXTERNAL IP Addresses the ISP gave me.  Then I plugged it into the ISP's MODEM.  

I have some of the same problems with it as what I've been having with the server that I'd like to use here.  And it mostly looks like a DNS issue.

Before I start, here is the information the ISP gave me for the service here:

This equates to the following:

So, I set this box up, but did not connect the NIC to anything.  I went into the GUI for the Network Manager, and set the IP address for it's nic to 69.146.183.59, the netmask to 255.255.255.248, and the gateway to 69.146.183.57.

I did the below tests that you all requested, and got the same results as below.  So, I figured it was at least partially a DNS issue, so I put the following in /etc/resolv.conf:

nameserver 69.144.49.30
nameserver 69.146.17.2

I then rebooted the server.

Below is the actual output of what I did.

As you can see, the entries for /etc/resolv.conf are no longer there.  (This also happened to me before, when I was fighting with this on the other machine this past Saturday.  I think it has to do with the network manager software.)

I am confused about the ping command working with the "-v" and the "-n" switches, but not with the "-Rvs", but maybe that is to be expected.  Perhaps that also threw me off yesterday?  I don't really need to know more about this -- but at least the fact that it can ping addresses on both the same network and on the external network is encouraging.

So, assuming this is simply a DNS issue, how do I configure it to see those nameservers without them getting lost again?

Or is there some other way to get the DNS working?
