I actually looked at SmartOS, but it seems to be going in the cloud direction. I was looking for a base to build an intranet vdi solution on. Thanks for the pointer though.

It may not be an appropriate answer on this list, but SmartOS looks like a better fit if you want a platform focused around KVM support.
