Maybe you need to report a bug to Samba in Ubuntu and then to report the
same to Samba upstream to figure it out.
And also, to report it to Illumos too as a bug for CIFS implementation
with Ubuntu as a client.

I see no reason not to actually use CIFS implementation instead of Samba,
anyone have actually some idea and experience on this matter?

We have to nail this down, since default install on both sides should be
able to cooperate and "just work".
