I'm done now, but I plan to redo and document for the wiki, so thanks. I'll make sure to include that.
My problem was not having set bootfs. I'm still puzzled about how to clear it.

I then needed to migrate any other filesystems and volumes
outside
the legacy BE.
I booted the new BE in single user and used it as an
opportunity
to prune my filesystems and resize swap and dump.
