I would shutdown the OI VM, and do a snapshot of the  VM.

Then go ahead and do the upgrade.

If things don't appear to be OK, then you can always revert using VBox 
to a point you know for sure is good.

This may be easier as you don't need to know anything about managing 
boot environments.
