It's the ZFS and "pkg system" that will make it seem awful.

both of them eat memory, ZFS silently in the background ... and as soon as
it starts swapping (at least on my spinning rust) it becomes unusable ... I
upgraded to 4GB, I could work in 2GB, but as soon as I needed more
(SQLDeveloper and DBVisualiser at the same time) it just turned ugly.

LXDE possibly is still the best answer for you, but I can't see the
packages anywhere ...

Have you thought of trying XtreamOS from Sonicle? they have a lot of this
work done, and have LibreOffice working as well.
