Other notes on Tribblix vs OI:

1. Tribblix is also a 'install-only' DVD and USB option at the moment versus the 'Live-DVD' option of OI. Also, it has support for automated installs in an easier fashion than OI.

2. OI is a 'server-centric' distro. Many packages community and/or sponsor supported are for server-based applications. As mentioned, GNOME/JDS is the primary desktop environment supported by OI development.

3. Tribblix uses the 'overlay' concept in managing application packaging versus individual packages.Also, this supports a better model of managing zones and packages within those zones.

4. Tribblix is one of the few illumos-based distros with the latest FOSS packages and Enlightenment/Xfce/GNOME support (mentioned already, but important to note).

Note: Enlightenment 0.18.8 and Xfce 4.10.0 can be built with the developer overlay option. Some updates needed there.

5. OI is a 'core distro' with value-added packages.The upstream consolidations is 'the bulk' of what OI supports and 'maintains' within its infrastructure. There is also a tendency to provide some compatibility and upward crossover development to Solaris 11.x track. Tribblix tends to become more 'bleeding-edge' - releasing new technology and ISO images with the latest illumos kernel snapshots at a faster pace.

That is, of course, a fair question.

If you think about the diversity of distros in the Linux world, they
tend to be differentiated in two primary ways, by packaging, and
by function. Where function could be desktop or server or
appliance, with subcategories in each (such as the choice of
desktop environment).

Tribblix differs significantly from OpenIndiana in both respects
- packaging is SVR4 vs IPS (and that is a deliberate choice);
desktop is Xfce and Enlightenment vs JDS/Gnome. The server
functions of Tribblix aren't yet fully fleshed out, but again it's
likely to do things differently.
