hmm ... I do appear to be stuck at an old version of the intel driver ...

root at jadlaptop:~# pkg install -nv

it reckons I should be able to update the X-incorporation, but why didn't
it update itself normally?

root at jadlaptop:~# pkg install -nv X-incorporation at 0.5.11-2015.0.0.0
            Packages to update:        1
     Estimated space available:  8.37 GB
Estimated space to be consumed: 71.27 MB
       Create boot environment:       No
Create backup boot environment:      Yes
          Rebuild boot archive:       No

Changed packages:
openindiana.org
  consolidation/X/X-incorporation
    0.5.11-2014.1.3.0:20150110T120140Z -> 0.5.11-2015.0.0.0:20150215T014214Z

I will reboot into oi-27 in a short while, and install the newer
X-incorporation, and then update it and see if that fixes everything.
