Thanks all for feedback, I suggest trying with OI Hipster 20160421
ISO/USB image to try it out.

How much RAM do you have? Do you use text install because intel graphics
driver DVD/USB does not work?
If already installed and running some previous illumos/OI one can do
beadm create, then beadm mount and delete all itt's contents , beadm
unmount, and then zfs send/zfs receive -F to that new BE's dataset, to
get copy of already installed OI on another machine/VirtualBox, having
existing BE and data intact (always have backups, too of course). That
won't help testing and fixing installing but could help you running it
in general on that hardware.

I suppose legacy USB support should be enabled if you want USB keyboard
support before system boots.
Not being able to boot form USB-connected DVD is separate (I think
illumos) issue.
Not being able to use USB keyboard during GRUB stage should be reported
to illumos.

Anyway, post bug reports , please, stating exact Openindiana
snapshot/release you tried (suggest 20160421 to be current), so that
they can be recorded and get more info if needed to be solved later. (Or
so you can test things to help solving).
We surely need more testing and thank you for reporting and involvment,
feel free to send more feedbacks..
