[oi-dev] victims needed for 2030 illumos use of git could really use a newer git

This changeset is being made available for testing. Give it a whirl, and
let me know if you have any issues. I'll answer some of the same questions
I answered for richowe:

- I'm not sure why you need to change the manual page stuff?

It was failing silently, and the way it was done in the Oracle Makefile
seemed to me needless baroque (it required changes to the packaging).

- I'm not sure what the comment about merge-tools and links refers to,
> I don't think whatever problem it dealt with happened to me?

What I noticed was that mergetools content ended up being packaged as the
cloney symlinks (thus pointing back to the source tree), which was
completely useless. My fix was to make sure that the files were copied in
directly. I don't know if re-hashing the comment helps at all.

configure was attempting to enable it but using the -pthread flag to gcc,
which isn't valid and creates a lot of noise during the build. There were
two ways to shut it up: disable pthreads explicitly or pass it the right
flag for gcc.
