Vnc native protocol (RFB or remote frame buffer) uses port 5900 by default.
If http connections are enabled for vnc, port 5800 is activated as an http
interface to a Java applet that launches a Java-based vnc viewer.

See http://www.tightvnc.com/faq.php#portfwd
and http://www.tightvnc.com/doc/java/README.txt
and http://www.tightvnc.com/ssh-java-vnc-viewer.php

The Java-based viewer isn't new; the last link above is from 2010, and the
viewer predates that.

See also the '-httpPort' option of Xvnc (i.e. the man page for Xvnc(1)).

Or simply try it yourself from a browser on a system that has vnc running
with http enabled:
http://localhost:5800/
