A graphical log in never completes, with the error.  I have to shut
the system down to recover.  The message "X connection to :0 broken"
must be caused by the shutdown.

No, I get the same icon jumping behavior.  It does rebuild .config .
mate-panel dumps core.  The .xsession-errors file is also different.
