[oi-dev] Date change and screen blank

I recently did an OS upgrade from 2026-05-31 to 2026-10-16 on one of
my systems. With the new BE, I noticed two problems. The first, and
the reason for the upgrade, was with the time change. Our premier
announced that the entire province would change to permanent daylight
saving time at the end of October. I'm seeing some peculiar output
from "zdump" now. Here's an example:
<mills at intel:779>$ zdump -i -c 2024,2027 America/Winnipeg
TZ="America/Winnipeg"
- - -06 CST
2024-03-10 03 -05 CDT 1
2024-11-03 01 -06 CST
2025-03-09 03 -05 CDT 1
2025-11-02 01 -06 CST
2026-03-08 03 -05 CDT 1
2026-11-01 02 -05 EST
2026-11-01 14 -05 EST
2026-11-02 02 -05 EST
2026-11-02 14 -05 EST
...
There's a transition every day in November, 12 hours apart. This does
not happen with Fedora Linux. I assume it's an illumos problem, and
not an OI problem. It may affect only "zdump", and not the date
displayed by the OS.
The second problem is with screen blanking. With "xscreensaver", the
system does not blank the screen before login. To me, a blank screen
means a black screen with the video shut off. It also does not blank
the screen after login, but the screen lock GUI does appear, on a
transparent background. The "lock screen" menu item appears to do
nothing.
I also tried "mate-screensaver", the new default. It still does not
blank the screen before login. It does blank the screen after login,
but does not shut off the video.
I'd better tell you a bit about this system. It uses a BIOS boot, not
an EFI boot. It's not using Nvidia graphics, but the built-in Intel
graphics on the CPU.
