I remember having had similar problems with VirtualBox in the past,
can't remember which guest OS. You might try tinkering with the
System/Processor and System/Acceleration settings. IIRC you'd rather
not check PAE/NX.

I have VT-x and Nested Paging on, PAE/NX off, 2D and 3D graphics
acceleration on, Guest Extensions not (yet) installed. So far this has
worked perfectly for me.
