Turns out I was a bit wrong about it being unrelated to the hardware.  When
I changed the ICH10R setting from "RAID" to "Auto/AHCI", the above bug went
away.  Not sure why, but there it is, in case anyone else see this.

Still get no graphics, though, just a text login.  Probably no working
driver for the ATI Radeon HD 4550 graphics cards (two of them).  I'll
try the text installer until I have the nVidia card in there.
