I have a system at home with an Optiarc CD/DVD burner that won't install Ubuntu from a burned CD, even though the CD checksums just fine using that very same drive. If I burn the exact same ISO image to a DVD+R disc, the installation works fine. As it turns out, this is a known problem with (some) Optiarc drives.

This ^^ The v20z internal drives are rubbish, and I've had endless problems with them. Best bet is to buy a cheap slim-line DVD drive from Ebay and fit that, or boot off the network.

I've had v20z and v40z playing up with all sorts of media - 'proper' Solaris x86 media, burned stuff, expensive CDs, cheap DVDs, you name it.

Cheers,
TOM
