That was because a pkg image update restored the old driver.
Whoops.

In case anyone else is trying to update to a newer Nvidia driver,
there's a closed bug on d.o.othat is very helpful...

Basically you have to pkg uninstall driver/graphics/nvidia
before you run the Nvidia driver script and in order to do
that you have to clone your current BE.
