The illegal request is not due to a SMART query although it is due to 
a query for drive status.  This is the illegal request response that 
scsi.d reports:

00011.633036046 ahci0:ILL 0x1a MODE_SENSE(6) address 01:00, lba 
0x000300, len 0x000024, control 0x00 timeout 60 CDBP ffffff256b4f5c10 
1 sched(0) cdb(6) 1a0003002400

The query seems to be made with each zfs transaction group.

The problem is occuring with two different vendors enterprise SATA 
drives, but far more with a Western Digital drive.  That one is now up 
to an illegal request count of 26201.
