I will note this in case similar incident happens.

BTW, a simple restart, and the system detect as amd64.

I think it is a timing bug on obtaining the string i386 without detecting amd64 first

menu, try to issue "c" to edit the boot option and in kernel/module
lines replace "$ISADIR" with "amd64" explicitly. HTH,
