One comment here. One of the sites I find most useful that's similar
to this is Beyond Linux from Scratch.

It's not actually Linux-specific, and it's handy to work out dependencies,
useful configure flags, download sources, and even just a list of what
applications would be worth installing. It obviously doesn't cover
things like porting to Solaris, but it helps skip past some of the more
basic hassles and I've found it very helpful in building software for
Tribblix (which in many ways is OpenSolaris from Scratch).
