But it is of paramount importance to those running desktops!
Remember that Linux became popular because it is reliable
alternative to both Windows and MacOS as a desktop system.

I think I made this clear: these are user-land related things.

No it is correct. We join forces and then each of us does whatever he/she
can do best.

Each year I compile TeXLive binaries for OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana and I try
to make the source compilable for Solaris. If everyone who is not a kernel
guru could do that for something he/she likes  then things would be far
better.
