while "Kernel Mode Setting" is kernel related, it is of no significance for
distros running on servers.
while USB3 support is kernel related, it is of no real significance for
those specifying the servers with specific bits of hardware, USB just isn't
enterprise quality.
"OpenOffice/LibreOffice and some other tools like gimp 2.8.0" however are
definitely not kernel related.
Your statement "To me it would be a good idea to join forces to improve the
kernel as well as the user-land ..." is wrong, however, because there are
loads of changes that are being commited into the Illumos kernel,
improvements are happening all the time ... please don't diss them because
they are not the changes you want, or not necessarily very visible.
I would love all of the changes you've suggested to be implemented, and
have (in the past) some limited luck getting LibreOffice compiled, but I
don't have the skills to work with the kernel, or the time, and I will (at
the moment) allow the guys who are working on it to keep working on it.
Just my 2cents.
