You can fit an extra 3.5" disk on the bottom of the case, right under the other four. To hold it in place you're supposed to use regular hdd screws inserted from the bottom of the case.

Subject: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Cram more drives into an HP xw8600

I hope someone here will have some hideously clever idea about
cramming about 4 more 3.5 HDD drives into an HP xw8600 server.

I bought it used off ebay but I think it still has a pretty stock
arrangement for hdd.

A section fitted out to hold only 4 hdd.

There is a space under the hdd brackets that looks like it could hold
several more hdd, but would require some specialized hardware from HP
or clever use of duct tape etc.

I've posted a couple of images through to access panel looking at the
motherboard and hdd area here:

http://zeus.jtan.com/~reader/vu1/disp.cgi

These are biggish images but scroll around a bit and you will notice
in the lower right hand corner... and empty space under the hdd area.

I've posted a query similar to this one on 2 of HP's own forums online
as of early yesterday... but had no replies as of yet.

Can anyone give a good idea how to add more drives?

Some smart way to get at least 4 more drives into play?
