Christopher,
I'd advise migrating your data and applications to a new install rather than upgrading.
The key supported installations are: 
1. oi_151a8 - http://dlc.openindiana.org/isos/151a8/2. hipster 2016.04.21 - http://dlc.openindiana.org/isos/hipster/

We'd rather you not lose any data or application support - so migrate to hipster first and see how that goes.

Hi, if you can get into the recovery shell, the correct command for boot archive shouldnbe `boktadm update-archive` (not `beadm` as in your post). If you booted recovery from another installation like a livecd, and imported your rpool and mounted the active rootfs at say `/a` then utter `bootadm update-archive -R /a` instead.

While a clean new install and porting your data and configs is good for many reasons (new storage hardware among them - it ages, you know), you might have luck updating your installation to snv_134 or so, from that jump to oi_151a, then update up to oi_151a9 (Dev line) and hop over to OI Hipster where you might have to also use several "well known" interim release points and end up with the current bleeding edge. This should be possible with repos served by pkg.openindiana.org, readjng its wiki, and a fair dose of good luck ;)
