I didn't see any major issues with the 12TB drives for JBOD setups.

Hmm… I'd suspect, that this 12TB is one of those new "archive" drives, isn't it? If yes, I wonder if support for those drives has already landed in Illumos. If yes, it should be of course safe to use them from OI's point of view.
