While all this work is already underway, it is worth mentioning that 
libjpeg-turbo has a configuration mode in which it is binary 
compatible with IJG JPEG 6b so it is a drop-in replacement for the 
library that OpenIndiana was already using without recompiling 
anything.

I was already doing this for a few years on my old OpenIndiana dev 
install.
