There is a dormant PR on oi-userland where I proposed a number of packages tracking different major versions of nvidia drivers (they all have non-overlapping hardware support). The common nvidia package there becomes a metapackage of sorts, just requiring that at least one actual driver pkg is installed (defaults to 340 as vefore). The branch for that PR probably should be brushed up to current driver versions, but otherwise one can check it out and build private packages as any other for OI. Experiments recommended in a separate BE that you can scrap if broken ;)

I did test it as far as being able to (co-)install various mixes and matches of drivers, with setting any one as preferred by a config for nvidia-selector.

Unfortunately, graphics never worked on my laptop, where apparently my mix of Intel and discrete NVidia (aka Optimus setup) is not supported by any driver I tried; word is the Bumblebee project from other OSes could address that if ported, or BIOS changes that I can't do on a corporate laptop.
