I haven't verified the timeline, but for an upgrade from that far out of
date, you probably also need to look into the switch from the old desktop
environment to MATE.

It could also be that you just need to activate the MATE graphical login.
What's the state of  svc:/application/graphical-login/lightdm:default ?

I've not tried to dual-boot OI, so I won't even take a shot that this:
