Yes, pkg install pkg:/mate_install && pkg uninstall mate_install is a working way to get mate.

When I converted from the old environment to MATE, I followed the
instructions that alp provided.  I would check the wiki first, to
see if there are updated instructions for the conversion, but I can't
verify whether there's anything there for MATE since for some reason
the OI wiki has failed to load the last few times I've tried to connect.
If you can't find anything on the wiki, the mailing list thread about
switching to MATE happened in mid-August 2016, so hopefully that
helps you find it in the archives.

Back when I switched, the pkg:/mate_install was a meta-package that pulled
in the majority of MATE.   That may have only been valid during a
(now-expired) transition phase, so I don't know if that's still a valid
path to get most of what you need.
