Do you ever look at the access times?
SSD or otherwise it must add writes when reading.
I have been disabling atime for ages with no noticed side effect.
I believe "on" is the default for historic reasons.
It must be a very historic reason as I have been disabling atime back 
past UFS to 4.2.
